Christmas Rush

Hi All! I always forget how busy this time of the year gets. I have my Christmas shopping done, but there's still a million and one things to do. We went to Kevin's work Christmas party on Saturday. I don't really fit in with business people and was bored, but I hung in there. I felt like I really didn't belong. My favorite part of the night was talking with some of Kevin's coworkers who found out I am a biology student and began to ask me random questions: What's your take on stem cell research? Do you believe in global warming? What do you think about the ban of DDT? Usually they are just asking so they can tell me their own point of view. It doesn't matter if a scientific point of view may help clarify things; they ask their questions just so they can tell you why you're wrong. So much fun! Anyway, turn about is fair play- my lab party is tomorrow night and Friday is my departmental Christmas dinner. Maybe Kevin will have something to say about all the liberal scientist geeks he meets.

Speaking of geeks- good news everyone! Futurama is back!! To celebrate, we invited a bunch of friends over to watch the new movie. It was good and typical Matt Groening humor. I highly recommend it to all sophisticated, open-minded, intellectuals. :)

As for further events, Riley is now allowed to stay outside of his crate all day and night. Of course, he wants to be in the bed the whole night with us, but we've made some compromises. He's allowed to sleep on the bed with me until Kevin comes to bed (usually an hour or so after I've gone to bed). Then he gets kicked off and sleeps on the floor on a big dog pillow donated to him by Brian, his 2nd dad. Our first week of it has been rough. Riley wakes up at 4am and thinks he needs to walk around aimlessly. He also snores, kicks, growls, and whimpers in his sleep. Sometimes, both he and Kevin will have snoring competitions, but I'm always the one who ends up losing. There was one night when Kevin was snoring loudly and woke Riley up. Riley tried to let Kevin know how unhappy he was with the snoring by sighing loudly and making little whining noises. They were both keeping me awake by that point, but I couldn't help but laugh listening to them.

Kevin's acting career may be starting! One of the commercials he was in is in the top five commercials and may be the one selected to air. We'll keep you posted. They'll put up a link to the commercials soon so you can see him.

So far, the brunt of the ice storms has missed us. We had one storm Saturday night that iced everything over until today. Kevin tried to take Riley on a walk and gave up after a block; they kept falling. I hope everyone is keeping warm! I'm not ready for Christmas yet, but I'm super ready for the break! I can hardly stand waiting for our vacation to start. Of course, before then I need to get some more gifts, get Riley supplies, figure out our vacation schedule, etc... I love the holidays in theory, but the reality of them make me crazy. If you need a little break and a big laugh, check out the YouTube clip below. Happy Holidays!

Fun post, Becky. Whatever you think, you're wrong about stem cells, etc. It's a political issue, not scientific. (**tongue in cheek**)

Sounds like Riley's growing up, all crate trained now. Good boy!

How can we see this commercial Kevin? You the man.

Ha ha! No ice storms down in Tennessee, my cold-fearing wife didn't even need a jacket for most of the week.
Ya-ping says the snoring competitions are preparing you for eventual parenthood and the inevitable lack of sleep that comes along with it.
I'm spoiled, I never have to deal with business people, just scientists, and if I didn't listen to NPR I'd think humanity was entirely composed of logical, kind, and brilliant people. I've lost my debating skills because everyone around me always agrees with me. Kinda scary.
